So to kinda continue the themes of the last few Jolts have Faith on some of the pitfalls and the challenges we deal with in trying to develop a good prayer life. Another one I hear all the time is “Father, I don’t know what to say. I don’t even know how to pray.” Well, that’s making prayer a lot more difficult than it needs to be.
Prayer at its basic level is just communication with God. And communication, as we know, can take a lot of different forms. It doesn’t need to be the formal prayers we memorized as a kid, it doesn’t even need to be reading the Bible. It can just be having a conversation with God pouring out our heart to Him. So if you struggle to pray, not knowing what to say,or even knowing what to say, but sometimes just not being in the mood or the groove, here’s something I have often shared with people in spiritual direction that seems to work. Simply begin a recap of your life with God. Tell them the things that are going well, the things you’re worried about, the things you’re upset about, the things that you feel pressure about, your anxieties, your stresses, just kind of pour out your heart to God. What’s on your mind so to speak? And before you know it, you’ve brought God into your life. You know, God knows all that stuff. He’s all powerful. But it’s our free will that keeps God at arms length. That keeps Him out of those worries, those concerns.
So when I open up to Him, when I pour out what’s on my heart, when I let God in, that sometimes the best prayer because it’s talking to God about what’s going on in my life. And before I realize that I’ve invited God in those areas that need healing. There’s areas in the inspiration. There’s areas where I might need a little push. So if you struggle to pray or on the days where you just can’t get into your normal prayer routine, just pour out your heart to God. What’s on your mind? What’s on your heart? And before you know it, you might be having some of the best prayer time you’ve ever had. Not a sermon or a homily, but just that little Jolt of Faith we all may need.
