Jolt of Faith 2/27 – Transform Your Daily Prayer: Embrace Humility & Invite God Into Every Moment
As we’ve talked in the last few Jolts of Faith about prayer, this last one I’d like to talk about kind of what prayer is really all about. And that is that humbling ourselves before God.And I think we all know this up here, but sometimes we have a hard time putting that into practice.I hear so many times from people, you know, Father, God’s got so many big things to worry about wars and earthquakes and cancer. Don’t wanna bother with my little problems, and we only get a God in prayer with what I like to call the 9-1-1 calls, the big stuff. The rest of it, we try to handle on our own.But my friends, that’s not that humble childlike approach to God that prayer needs to be all about. St.Therese De Lisieux one of my favorite saints, you’ve heard me quote a lot, often said that I’m that child who is utterly dependent on God as a child is on their parent. And that’s the way we need to approach prayer. It’s not just bringing God the big emergencies the 9-1-1calls. It’s bringing God the little stuff.
And one of the best pieces of advice a spiritual director ever gave to me is that each morning before you start your day, pray about what you know is coming up. That meeting that you really don’t wanna sit through, that phone call to that parishioner who always is complaining about something. You know, bringing to God those little things we know that are gonna happen in that day and inviting Him in and asking Him to inspire and bless you. And I can honestly tell you when I remember to do that, those meetings always go better than I thought they would be. Surprisingly, the phone call is not about a complaint. It’s actually about something else. You know, I can see God’s hand when I bring Him in. Ask Him to help me with those little everyday things that we often try to handle our own. My friends, that is what humility. That is what prayer needs to be about. Not just keeping God at arms length for the big stuff, but inviting God into every moment, every aspect of my life.By having that rich, strong personal relationship with Him that prayer is all about. Maybe my problem isn’t how I’m praying. It’s that how I’m looking at prayer. And I’m really willing to go to God with everything.Invite God to become part of my daily life. Not a sermon, not a homily, just that little Jolt of Faith we all may need.
