Jolt of Faith 3/20 – Fasting in Lent: Uncover Your Deep Hunger for God

The church during Lent also asks us in a particular way to enter into fasting, and Christ makes it very clear in the Gospels that he expects His disciples to fast. Now what does fasting do? Very obviously, fasting makes us hungry. We become aware of our need for food, of our natural need, that we can’t ,we’re not enough on our own. We need other things in order to sustain us and to feed us. .If we let it, fasting can also make us more aware of a deeper hunger we have for God.We don’t often feel this hunger because we’re very good at satisfying all kinds of needs on our own or at least trying to.But there is a deep place, a deep place in our hearts that can only be filled by God, a deep hunger for Him that we often don’t fill – with Him.

We tend to look to entertainment or all kinds of other distractions to keep me from feeling lonely or bored. But if we let fasting, even maybe fasting from entertainment, bring us into those uncomfortable places to feel our hunger for God.We might finally be in a place where we realize our need for Him.We might finally be able to reach out to Him and to expect Him and want Him to show up to satisfy that deeper hunger that fasting can bring us an awareness of.
