Jolt of Faith 5/15 – Why We Call Mary the Mother of God | Hail Mary Reflection Explained

Why do Catholics call Mary the Mother of God? Is this really in the Bible?

In this video, we continue our Hail Mary reflection series by exploring the line “Holy Mary, Mother of God.” Discover the scriptural roots of this title, where Elizabeth calls Mary the mother of my Lord—a reverent way of saying Mother of God.

We also clarify a common misunderstanding: Catholics aren’t saying Mary created God or gave birth to the Trinity, but that she is the mother of Jesus Christ, who is God. Understanding this helps us honor Mary’s unique role in salvation history and deepens our love for Christ.

Jolt of Faith 5/15 – Why We Call Mary the Mother of God | Hail Mary Reflection Explained

The next line we’ll be looking at from the Hail Mary is Holy Mary, Mother of God. So why do we call Mary the Mother of God? One, again, this is a direct quotation from scripture. Elizabeth, when she greets Mary also calls her the Mother of my Lord. In Hebrew, my Lord is the way you refer to God. We can’t say his name Yahweh out loud, so you call Him my Lord. So Elizabeth is acknowledging, Mary, you’re the Mother of my Lord, you are the Mother of God. But also we realize that If Jesus is God and Mary is the Mother of Jesus, logically that means that Mary is also the mother of God. We’re not saying that Mary gave birth to the Holy Trinity that she is somehow like God and His divine nature came from her -we’re simply acknowledging that if Jesus is who we believe He is, namely He is God. In His person, He is God. Then Mary is the Mother of the whole person of Jesus. The whole person that she was the Mother of that she conceived and gave birth to was Jesus, who is God. And so that’s why we honor Her and call Her and refer to Her as the Mother of God.
