Mary, Refuge of Sinners | Jolt of Faith | 5.28.26

We reflect on the title Mary, Refuge of Sinners and the powerful role Our Blessed Mother plays in leading people back to God.

So often in moments of struggle, addiction, failure, or distance from faith, Mary becomes the lifeline that gently draws us back to her Son. Just as many of us turned to our mothers when we needed compassion and guidance, Mary lovingly intercedes for us and helps bring us back into God’s grace.

This reflection is a reminder that no one is too far from God’s mercy, and that Our Lady continues to guide sinners, the lost, and the brokenhearted toward the salvation found in Christ.

This week’s title of Our Lady I would like to focus in on is Refuge of Sinners. You know, I’ve heard so many times as a priest in the confessional, when people are struggling with an addictive sin or when people have wandered from God, it’s often Mary, that is the lifeline that brings them back. I think all of us growing up. Our mom was usually the one we went to when we messed up. We were a little afraid of our dad and he was the disciplinarian and our mom was always the one who would discipline us but with compassion and gentleness. And Mary is that role for us sometimes when we have our own bad choices have isolated or distance ourselves from God, she can be the rope, she can be the lifeline to bring us back into His grace. And that’s why that title Refuge of Sinners is so important for all of us. Not only when we find ourselves distant from God, but for all the people in our world who might not know God or might not realize how important God is for them. To ask Mary to be that refuge for them that lifeline, that rope – to bring them back to the Salvation of her Son. Not a sermon, not a homily. Just that little Jolt of Faith, we all may need.
