The Courage of St. Sebastian | Saintly Summer | 7.2.26

This week in our Saintly Summer series, we reflect on the witness of St. Sebastian—a Roman soldier who chose faithfulness to Christ over power, prestige, and personal comfort. As captain of the Praetorian Guard, Sebastian held a position of great influence in the Roman Empire. Yet when the time came, he made his faith public, even though it ultimately led to his martyrdom. His example challenges us today. In a culture where it’s often easier to keep our faith hidden, St. Sebastian reminds us that following Jesus isn’t meant to stay beneath the surface. Living for Christ may require difficult choices, courage in the face of opposition, and a willingness to stand out.

This week’s saint, is Saint Sebastian. Saint Sebastian was the captain of the Praetorian Guard. The head of the Roman legion that protected, Caesar and was martyred as a result of his fate. Now, Sebastian had to choose to make his faith public. He could have lived a comfortable, powerful life of influence in ancient Rome. But Christ was more important than the influence, the power, and the prestige and St. Francis was martyred, by his own soldiers who turned against him. And you know in our modern day and age, sometimes it’s easy to just go below the surface with our faith, to not attract attention. But Saint Sebastian reminds us that if we’re really faithful to Christ it needs to attract attention. And sometimes people may turn against us, sometimes people might not like us and sometimes we too might need to make some hard choices. But after all, isn’t that what it truly means to make Jesus the King of our lives and of our hearts.
