As we begin November, the Church invites us to remember and pray for our loved ones who have gone before us. While we celebrate all the saints in glory on All Saints Day, we also remember the faithful departed and those still on their way to heaven. Through our prayers, we continue the bonds of affection that death does not unravel. Join us in reflecting on the gift of praying for the souls of the faithful departed, the beauty of purgatory, and the hope of one day being reunited in God’s presence.

As you begin the month of November, All Saints Day that great holy day of obligation falls on a Sunday this year, which will celebrate all the saints and glory. But it’s also a reminder for what we celebrate throughout the month of November, which is to pray for our brothers and sisters who are still on their way to glory. And throughout the month of November, we remember the dead, our beloved relatives, family, friends. Those who have no one to pray for them. Do you recognize that by our prayers it not only continues that bond of affection, that knits us together throughout life, that helps them on their way to the kingdom of God. It is one of our great gifts, as Roman Catholics, as we believe that even after death our hearts are not completely with the Lord yet, which let’s be honest, most of ours aren’t quite there yet there still things holding us back. God gives us that time to let go of those things that purgation of purgatory, so that we can be ready for eternity with him and that’s why throughout this month of November, it’s so important to remember our loved ones. You know, one of the most beautiful lines in the Christian wake service is a line that says the following “the Bonds of affection, we knit throughout life, do not unravel in death”. And by praying for our loved ones and our friends who have gone before us, we keep those bonds strong until through the grace of God one day we see them again before God’s throne. So as we enter the month of November and celebrate all the saints in glory, let’s also remember, all of our family, friends and relatives who are still on the way to glory and need our help, need our prayers that by praying with them and for them, we keep those bonds strong, we help them on the way to heaven, until one day, we hope to find our place there as well. Not a homily, but just that little Jolt of Faith. to keep us grounded in what it’s all about.
